Emanuele Giofre, head of the European Union Mission in Serbia, stated tonight that he expects that the enlargement policy will remain high on the EU agenda after the European Parliament elections, as it has become a crucial issue.
„This is a very important night for Europeans and the Western Balkans, but also for Serbia,“ Giofre said at the opening of the „European Election Night 2024“ in Belgrade organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia and the European Western Balkans portal.
Giofre emphasized that the future EU Parliament will decide on the choice of a new political perspective that will have to be taken into account in the enlargement process.
He noted that the elections started on June 6, and will end tonight at 11:00 p.m. when polling stations in Italy close.
„We have different electoral systems in member states. These are also national issues, but these elections will certainly indicate trends characterizing the European political landscape,“ Giofre said, adding that a large number of EU citizens living in Serbia also voted.
Giofre pointed out that voter turnout in European elections is slightly lower than in national elections.
„I think the preliminary indication is that voter turnout has increased this year as well. The European Parliament is increasing its influence in shaping European policy,“ concluded Giofre.
